5 Tips For Making A Music Video

I have been a part of a lot of amazing video projects over the past few years, as a result, I have developed five tips for making a music video.  I would have to say making music videos rank among some of my favorite video projects. I have a deep passion for music and feel many times it is the soundtrack to our lives. A music artist pours their heart and soul into their songs to motivate, inspire and relate to the listener unlike any other art form. A great song can stand alone, but what can make it even greater is bringing it to life by telling it’s story through a music video.

One music video project I recently produced was for Julien Grei (some say he and I look alike) aka Mr. Grei for his music video “Fifty Shades with Mr. Grei” which was a tribute to the popular book Fifty Shades of Grey by E.L. James. Here are my five tips.

Story Line

With “Fifty Shades with Mr. Grei” we developed a story line based upon a pivotal scene and chapter from the Fifty Shades of Grey series where Anastasia Steele meets Christian Grey for the first time in his office. The book narrates the dialogue from Anastasia’s perspective so when developing it we had no speaking parts for Mr. Grei, it would be all told from the female’s perspective.  We wanted to paint the picture of Mr. Grei traveling city to city where he agrees to do an interview with a young intelligent reporter. Throughout the interview the tension builds (similar to in the book) and eventually leads to Mr. Grei breaking out in his song.

Location

They say it for businesses and real estate all of the time “Location, Location, Location!” Well, the same applies with music videos. Mr. Grei’s brand associates with class, sophistication and style. That being said, we picked the SLS Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, NV for the location for our shoot. The rooms are very modern and unique presenting a luxurious yet very artistic feel.

Cast

Casting is another key factor when shooting a music video. Not only does the character have to look the part but they also have to be able to act in such a way that will make the viewer believe in whatever message they are trying to bring across. Co-starring with Julien was model, actress and media personality Asia Jade. I work with Asia on a lot of other projects and when it came time to casting the female role for this music video, I knew she was the right one to play the part.

Director

Choosing the right director is essential. This is the person who is going to lead the cast, film crew and anyone else throughout the production. In this case, I chose to work with my brother Matt whom I have worked with on several video projects. Matt really knows lighting, the right shots to take and is great at giving direction to the cast on where they need to be and how they should act. I went over the script and vision with Matt before going into the shoot so when it came time to film, he knew how to direct Asia and Julien bringing out what we needed to get the best product possible.

Promotion

Finally, after hours of hard work from the cast, film crew and post production team, it’s time to share the fruits of your labor with the world. One idea you may want to consider is getting behind the scene photos of your music video shoot. Julie Bergonz aka “The Sin City Shooter” took some amazing shots during our filming which came in very handy leading up to the videos debut. In addition, I went to graphics expert Shane Allen of Carmello Vision to design a couple of “movie poster” images from Julie’s pictures. Not only did these serve as great content for social media platforms such as Instagram and Facebook but they also brought a level of professionalism to the project as if it came straight out of Hollywood.

Another way we have gone about promoting this video is by showing short clips from the video on Mr. Grei’s Instagram. If people are interested in viewing the entire video, we tell them to click the link in thee description which will take them to the full video on Youtube.

Lastly, Facebook ads have played a pivotal role in the promotion of “Fifty Shades with Mr. Grei.” For this campaign we targeted predominantly females who shared an interest in the Fifty Shades of Grey book series and/or who like the movie. This has not only lead to more fans but have provided us with a lot of information which has given us an insight to what parts of the world are showing the most engagement to the Mr. Grei brand.

There you have it, the next time your considering producing a music video for yourself or a client be sure to remember these 5 tips for making a music video before going into your next music video shoot. I would like to thank everyone who was involved in the making of this video project and I’m looking forward to the next one!
